where they were. But he did know he had to keep D.J. safe. More so now than ever before. He'd misjudged the danger, and D.J. had paid for his mistake. He wouldn't fail her again.
"I'm sure she meant to go to the cabin," Dan said. "They'll never find you there."
"What cabin?"
Dan's eyes widened in surprise. "She didn't tell you?"
"We didn't have much time. She told me to go to Isadora; then she passed out."
"Her father has a hunting lodge. Very remote. Unless you know where to look, you'd never find it.
"Great. How am I going to get us there?"
"I'll take you."
Chris shook his head. "Thanks, but we can't be left anywhere without a means of escape. It's too dangerous."
"There's a pickup at the cabin. Ed uses it when he's up here. We'll hide your car in my shed. With all the bullet holes and smashed glass, I don't think we'd better let it sit outside too long. Kind of conspicuous."
Chris didn't like involving anyone else in his problems, but he had little choice. With D.J. unconscious, they were adrift in the north woods. "All right. I guess I don't have many choices right now. I'll drive the car around back."
"No, give me the keys. I'll take care of it. Even though those guys left by the other side of town, I'd rather you stayed out of sight until we get you both to the cabin."
